Gundelhof, Historic residential building in Inner City, Vienna, Austria.
The Gundelhof is a multi-story residential building at Brandstätte 5 and Bauernmarkt 4 in Vienna's Inner City, reconstructed in 1949 with modern architectural features after its destruction. The structure blends functional design with its setting in the historic city center.
The original building was first documented in 1343 and contained the Thomaskapelle, a medieval chapel. Emperor Friedrich III visited in 1458, giving the location considerable prestige at that time.
The Gundelhof served as a music venue between 1815 and 1824 where Schubert performed his new works for Vienna's audiences. Its rooms attracted artists and music lovers who came to hear compositions premiered here.
The building is centrally located and accessible from multiple street sides, making it easy to find in the densely built Inner City area. Public transportation is nearby and various routes connect to the surrounding streets and squares.
The structure was completely destroyed in April 1945, and architect Franz John created a new building in 1949 that shows early modernist design in the post-war period. This reconstruction stands as an example of how Vienna restored its architectural continuity.
