Betriebsbahnhof Vorgarten, Railway carriage house in Leopoldstadt district, Vienna, Austria.
The Betriebsbahnhof Vorgarten was a tram maintenance facility located between Vorgartenstrasse, Walcherstrasse, Engerthstrasse, and Weschelstrasse, containing repair garages and multiple track loops for vehicle operations. The complex housed both active service areas and storage sections for the city's tram fleet.
The private Vienna Tramway Company built this facility in 1897 to support electric tram operations on the Transversal line. Operations continued until 1982, when the U1 subway line to Kagran opened and made the service redundant.
The site was a central hub for Vienna's tram operations over many decades. Local residents knew it as the place where vehicles were prepared and dispatched for daily service throughout the city.
The site is no longer accessible to visitors, having been repurposed in the 1980s after closure. The exterior walls of the former depot remain visible from the surrounding streets, though the interior has been converted to commercial use.
After closure, the long track sections remained in use as test and training grounds for many years. This was particularly useful following the discontinuation of tram service to the Lusthaus, when aging vehicles could still be evaluated before disposal.
