Nordbahnviertel, Urban development district in Vienna, Austria
Nordbahnviertel is an urban development district in Vienna's second district spanning about 85 hectares on the site of the former Nordbahnhof railway station. The area blends residential and commercial buildings with preserved railway structures including a water tower and an early railway bridge.
The site was once an important railway junction before the Nordbahnhof station ceased its original operations. The neighborhood emerged through a comprehensive transformation of this industrial area, with portions of the rail infrastructure carefully retained.
The neighborhood takes its name from the former railway station and draws residents from many different backgrounds who share these new streets. Public squares and gathering spaces throughout the area encourage people to meet and build community ties.
The neighborhood is easy to explore on foot, and public spaces are open and accessible to visitors. A large natural park runs through the area, providing green spaces for walking and sitting within the urbanized district.
Embedded within the park are original railway elements integrated into the modern natural landscape, creating an unusual mix of industrial heritage and nature. Visitors walk paths that wind between these preserved structures and open green areas.
