Shamkir District

Shamkir is a district in western Azerbaijan with varied terrain that ranges from flat agricultural areas to hilly regions approaching the Lesser Caucasus mountains. The landscape supports farming activities and includes a hydroelectric power station that provides electricity to the area.

The region was an ancient trading hub before being established as a German settlement called Annenfeld in the early 1800s. It later underwent administrative changes and received its present-day status as a district in the middle of the 20th century.

The district contains architectural remains from different periods, including fortress ruins and historical mosques that show how various peoples settled here over time. Walking through villages, you can see these structures scattered across the landscape, each telling part of the story of human habitation.

The area is accessible to visitors but has basic infrastructure, so traveling by car is helpful. Spring and summer months are better for getting around, as roads and paths are in better condition during these seasons.

Archaeologists uncovered ruins of an ancient Persian palace from the Achaemenid period near Qaracəmirli. These discoveries suggest the area was home to important civilizations long before its recent history.
