Mingachevir

Mingachevir is a city in central Azerbaijan that spreads across both sides of the Kura River at about 545 meters above sea level. The urban layout combines Soviet-era apartment blocks with newer buildings and industrial facilities.

The city developed from a small settlement starting in 1948, with German prisoners of war playing a key role in the initial construction after World War II. The dam and hydroelectric station, completed in 1953, became central to the region's economic growth.

The name comes from Persian origins meaning "city of fires." Soviet-era buildings shape the everyday landscape, and you can see how locals move through public spaces and gather in the town center.

The city is easiest to explore on foot since main areas are fairly close together and the river serves as a good landmark. Visit the museum near the town center to learn about local heritage, and head to the dam for views of the surrounding landscape.

Archaeological digs in the area uncovered settlements from around 3000 BC that were discovered during the building of the power station. These findings show that people lived here long before the modern city took shape.
