Balakan District, Administrative district in northern Azerbaijan

Balakan District is an administrative area in northern Azerbaijan with river systems and varied landscapes at the foothills of the Greater Caucasus. The terrain features multiple water sources and slopes that shape both farming practices and daily life for residents.

The region became part of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic in 1930 following border disputes between Azerbaijan and Georgia. This period marked a shift in how the area was governed and organized.

Local communities maintain distinct musical and dance traditions that reflect the presence of Azerbaijani, Avar, and Ingiloy peoples living here. These practices appear regularly in celebrations and everyday gatherings throughout the district.

The district's economy centers on farming, with tobacco and fruit production as main activities alongside livestock raising. Visitors should expect to encounter rural character and the rhythms of agricultural work throughout the area.

An annual Hazelnut Festival has been held here since 2017, showcasing the agricultural heartbeat of local communities. The event brings together residents to celebrate the region's connection to hazelnut farming.
