Velika Jastrebica, Peak in Orjen mountain range, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina
Velika Jastrebica is the highest point of the Orjen mountain range, rising to 1,862 meters (6,109 feet) with limestone rock formations and varied plant life across its slopes. The peak sits on the border between Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The mountain became a frontier marker between the two countries after the political changes of the 20th century. Before that, these peaks served as natural boundaries for various regional communities and territories.
Shepherds from nearby villages move their flocks to the mountain pastures each summer, following practices that have shaped life in this region for generations. This seasonal rhythm remains visible in the landscape and local routines.
The paths are steep and rocky, so proper hiking boots and a good map or GPS device are needed for safe navigation. Conditions are most favorable from June through September when weather is more stable.
On clear days the view from the summit spreads across both countries, revealing landscapes that flow naturally together despite the political boundary. Few visitors realize how the geology itself ignores the border line.
