Snježnica i Konavosko polje

Snježnica and Konavosko polje form a varied landscape in southern Croatia where steep mountain slopes rise to about 1234 meters while fertile plains stretch below. The terrain shifts from dense woodland on the slopes to open agricultural fields in the lowlands, creating distinct natural zones.

An Austro-Hungarian path once connected the settlement of Kuna to the mountain peak, revealing centuries of human activity in this rugged terrain. This old route demonstrates how people have long navigated through this challenging landscape.

Local residents hold a deep connection to Sveti Ilija chapel on the highest peak, where they gather during Pentecost to honor a tradition passed down through generations. This spiritual tie to the mountain shapes the community's identity and seasonal rhythms.

Hiking trails cross this region, but certain areas of the mountain and surrounding heights hold unexploded mines, making it essential to stay on marked paths. Always remain within designated routes to travel safely through the landscape.

The eastern summit Štedar holds the only population of munjeika pine trees found anywhere in Croatia, a rare species that makes this location ecologically significant. These trees grow nowhere else in the country and contribute to the site's special character.
