Trebinje

Trebinje is a city in Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, located along the Trebišnjica River and surrounded by hills with vineyards and cypress trees. The old town stretches from the riverbank to stone-clad houses and narrow lanes, while newer districts spread along the main roads.

The settlement was founded in medieval times on a trade route between the coast and inland areas and took its current form during Ottoman rule until the late 19th century. With the transition to Austro-Hungarian administration, the first paved streets and public buildings in European style appeared.

The name comes from Latin Tribulium and passed through Byzantine and Slavic use to reach its current form, reflected in the architecture and street names. Residents meet at the market square and in the old town lanes, where small shops sell local products and cafés under plane trees invite visitors to linger.

The town center can be explored on foot, while walks along the riverbank offer shade under trees on warm days. Outside the summer months, the streets are less busy and shops close in the early afternoon for a break.

An orthodox church stands on a hill above the town and is reached by a Way of the Cross that runs through pines and stone gardens. From up there, you overlook the river valley and the red roofs stretching towards the nearby mountains.
