The settlement dates back 4,000 years, with the first written records appearing in 1382 through documentation from the Republic of Ragusa.
The Stara Cuprija bridge, constructed in 1682 with six stone arches over the Neretva River, represents Ottoman architectural influence in the region.
The city serves as a transportation hub between Sarajevo and Mostar, offering regular train and bus connections through the Neretva valley.
Tito's nuclear bunker, built between 1953 and 1979, extends underground for 6,500 square meters and now functions as a contemporary art space.
