Old town of Visoki

Visoki is a medieval castle ruin located on Visočica hill, standing 213 meters above ground with two lookout towers at its southwestern entrance. The fortification covers ground measuring roughly 60 by 25 meters with walls that reach 2 meters in thickness.

This fortress town emerged in the 14th century and served as a key administrative center for issuing royal documents. It maintained this role until its final charter was issued in 1436, marking the end of its active period as a stronghold.

The site displays medieval Bosnian building methods with thick defensive walls and remnants of residential structures in the settlement below. Visitors can still see the outlines of old houses that reflect daily life in this hilltop fortress.

To reach the remains, visitors must navigate steep hiking trails on the hillside, which can be challenging for those with mobility issues. It is wise to bring suitable hiking shoes and plenty of water, especially on warm days.

Archaeological excavations between 2007 and 2008 uncovered well-preserved wall sections that were subsequently restored. These efforts allowed researchers to better understand the layout and organization of the medieval settlement.
