Mile, Archaeological site in Arnautovići, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Mile is an archaeological site with the remains of a medieval church and numerous ancient tombs near Visoko. The location also contains the foundations of a former monastery and is protected today as a National Monument.
The site developed in the 14th century as a coronation and burial place for the kings of Bosnia. It remained the most important royal location for several generations before losing this role in the 15th century.
The burial objects and building structures here show the religious practices of medieval Bosnian rulers. You can see how important this location was for ceremonies and how much care was given to honoring the dead.
The site is difficult to reach and requires advance arrangements with the Visoko municipal authorities. It is wise to contact the local authorities before traveling to get access information and guidance.
Excavations uncovered more than one hundred medieval tombs, including royal burial chambers within the church structure. This large concentration of burials in a single location is unusual and shows how important the place remained over many decades.
