Skakavac Waterfall, Natural monument and waterfall in Sarajevo Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Skakavac Waterfall is a natural monument that drops roughly 98 meters over a vertical limestone wall in a mountainous landscape. The water plunges over smooth rocks, creating a striking sight north of Sarajevo.
The waterfall and its surrounding area were officially designated as a protected natural monument in 2002. This decision recognized the geological and environmental significance of the site.
The name comes from local traditions and refers to the power of the falling water in the landscape. The area around the waterfall has long served as a place where people experience their connection to nature and view it as deeply important.
The best time to visit is from spring through autumn, when the paths are easier to navigate and water flow is plentiful. The location is quite remote, so plan ahead and bring proper gear for hiking.
In winter months, the water freezes in different patterns along the limestone wall, forming natural ice sculptures that shift as the season progresses. This creates an entirely different appearance of the site compared to warmer times.
