Srebrenik Fortress, Medieval fortress in Srebrenik, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Srebrenik Fortress is a stone castle that stands on steep rocks along the northeastern slopes of Majevica mountain. The structure features thick walls and a commanding tower that rises above the surrounding landscape.
The fortress was built in the 13th century as a fortified stronghold in the region. It gained particular importance when a regional ruler issued significant edicts and agreements from this location in 1333.
The fortress contains remains of an Ottoman mosque from the early 16th century, representing different periods of regional governance and architectural styles.
The fortress sits about 5 kilometers from the town and is reached through a bridge crossing. Reaching the structure requires some physical effort due to its steep location on the mountainside.
The fortress name comes from the word for silver, as someone wished for the structure to gleam like the precious metal among the mountain peaks. This poetic naming reflects the original significance attributed to the stronghold.
