Ozren Monastery, Serbian Orthodox monastery in Petrovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Ozren Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery in Petrovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, dedicated to Saint Nicholas and set at the foot of Mount Ozren. It consists of a main church and surrounding monastic buildings, and it is listed as a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The monastery was founded in the second half of the 16th century under Serbian Patriarch Makarije Sokolović, who obtained permission from Ottoman authorities to build it. Over the centuries that followed, the complex received artistic additions that are still visible today.
Inside the church, a marble iconostasis and thirteen old icons are still in place and can be seen during a visit. The frescoes on the interior walls, painted in the early 17th century, give the space a solemn and devotional character.
The monastery sits in a remote mountain setting outside the center of Petrovo, so getting there by personal vehicle is the most practical option. Public transportation does not serve the area directly, so planning the route in advance is advisable.
The monastery keeps a 17th-century Pietà painted by Emmanuel Lambardos, an artist of the Cretan School, which links the site to the artistic traditions of the eastern Mediterranean. This connection is something most visitors do not expect to find in a mountain monastery in central Bosnia.
