Tešanj Castle, Medieval fortress in Tešanj, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Tešanj Castle is a stone fortress built on a steep cliff in Tešanj with strong defensive walls that funnel access through a single entrance. The ruins reveal multiple levels and chambers where garrisons once lived and guards kept watch over the surrounding land.

The fortress displays layers of different civilizations built up over thousands of years. Roman, Slavic, and later Ottoman structures overlap in the foundations and walls of the site.

Locals call the fortress Gradina, and a clock tower was built below it in the late 17th or early 18th century. The Ottomans kept a permanent garrison here, and the site is now a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The site sits on a hilltop, so wear sturdy shoes and allow time to navigate the steep paths carefully. Visit during clear weather when visibility is good and the pathways are safest to walk on.

In 1697 the fortress withstood a three-day siege by Prince Eugene of Savoy without surrendering. This act of resistance remains embedded in local history and continues to be told in stories passed down through the region.
