St. Mary’s Church with St. Luke’s Belltower, Medieval church ruins in Jajce, Bosnia and Herzegovina
St. Mary's Church with St. Luke's Belltower stands at the foot of the Jajce citadel, displaying Gothic architectural features and decorative stonework in its walls. The structure preserves traces of different building periods in its masonry.
The building began as a Romanesque basilica in the 12th century and was later transformed into a Gothic church. The site witnessed the coronation of King Stephen in 1461, one of the last major royal ceremonies before Ottoman rule.
St. Mary's Church contains visible 15th-century frescos depicting the Last Judgment, representing the Late Gothic art period in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Visiting requires coordination with the JU Agency Jajce, particularly for group visits and photography. Best visited on clear days to see the stonework details and views of the surrounding area clearly.
Conversion to a mosque in 1528 shows how the building adapted under Ottoman administration. Major fires in 1658 and 1832 destroyed the roof and vaults, leaving only the stone walls standing today.
