Počitelj Citadel, Medieval fortress in Počitelj, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Počitelj Citadel is a medieval fortification that rises steeply on a hillside above the Neretva River, dominating the entire settlement below. The structure consists of defensive towers, thick walls, and narrow lanes winding through the defensive enclosure.

The fortress was built in the 15th century and served for centuries as a strategic military post controlling the Neretva valley. It changed hands multiple times throughout history and experienced various occupations that shaped its complex past.

The fortress defines the settlement's character, as its walls and towers have shaped community life for generations. Local residents move through the paths and squares within the fortifications daily, making history and everyday activity deeply intertwined.

The climb to the fortress follows paved paths through the old town, some quite steep and requiring sturdy footwear. It is best to visit early in the day when temperatures are cooler and fewer visitors are present.

The fortress walls contain gaps and stone formations that reflect sound in unusual ways, creating natural acoustic effects. This helped guards detect approaching threats from considerable distances along the river valley.
