Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary, Protected area in Chattogram Division, Bangladesh
The sanctuary extends across 7,764 hectares of land, containing scattered patches of garjan trees and diverse wildlife species within its boundaries.
Established in 1986 as the first wildlife sanctuary in Bangladesh, this area has experienced substantial changes due to agricultural expansion and logging activities.
Fifteen villages around the sanctuary maintain connections with the protected land, while local women participate in conservation patrols wearing green saris.
The Bangladesh Forest Department manages the sanctuary with support from international organizations, implementing programs to protect endangered species and restore habitats.
The sanctuary functions as a vital corridor for Asian elephants traveling between Bangladesh and Myanmar, supporting populations of muntjac deer and fishing cats.
