Shah Amanat Bridge, Cable-supported bridge in Chittagong, Bangladesh
Shah Amanat Bridge is a cable-supported span crossing the Karnaphuli River with a total length of 950 meters and separate lanes for cars, bicycles, and walkers. The structure accommodates four main traffic lanes alongside specialized routes for rickshaws and bicycles, with pedestrian walkways on both sides.
Construction began in August 2006 and was completed in September 2010, creating the third crossing point over the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong. This project marked an important step in improving transportation connections within the city.
The bridge is named after an influential Islamic spiritual figure from the 18th century whose legacy remains meaningful in the Chittagong region today. This naming choice reflects how the place connects to the area's religious heritage.
The bridge is well-organized with clear separation between vehicle traffic, bicycles, and foot traffic, making it easy to navigate depending on your mode of transport. Crossing during peak hours can feel crowded, so quieter times often provide a more pleasant experience.
This was Bangladesh's first bridge using an extrados cable design, a specialized construction method that allows for a distinctive shape and long clear spans. Few visitors realize this engineering approach makes the structure notably different from typical river crossings in the region.
