Kelmis, Municipal district in Liège Province, Belgium.
Kelmis is a municipality in Liège Province in eastern Belgium that includes several villages such as Hergenrath and Neu-Moresnet. The area sits in a border region where German and French languages and traditions meet.
From 1816 to 1919, the area was part of Neutral Moresnet, a territory jointly governed by the Netherlands and Prussia because of valuable zinc deposits. After World War One, the region became part of Belgium and developed as an important mining center.
German and French influences are visible throughout the area, reflected in street names, building styles, and daily life. This blend of two cultures has shaped the character of the municipality.
The municipality is located in a border region where administration provides services in German and French. Visitors should be aware that this is a rural area best reached by car or local buses.
More than 50 original border stones from the Neutral Moresnet period still stand scattered throughout the municipality. These stones today serve as quiet reminders of the area's unusual political past.
