Design Museum Gent, Design museum in central Ghent, Belgium.
Design Museum Gent is a design museum in Ghent, Belgium, displaying furniture, ceramics, glass, and textiles from Belgium and many other countries. It occupies an 18th-century mansion with a modern extension added to house more of the collection.
The museum was founded in 1903 by a group of design enthusiasts who formed the Union des Arts Industriels et Décoratifs. Their aim was to bring skilled craftsmanship closer to modern design thinking.
The collection reflects how designers and makers thought about beauty, function, and everyday life across different periods. Visitors can see how taste and craftsmanship evolved through the objects on display.
The museum is currently closed for renovations, but parts of the collection are on display at different locations in Belgium and abroad. It is worth checking online before visiting to find out where temporary exhibitions are being held.
The collection holds around 22,000 objects, among them the Alonso International Glass Collection with about 300 works by artists from many countries. This glass collection on its own shows how many different techniques and traditions can be found within a single material.
