Beersel Castle, Water castle in Beersel, Belgium

Beersel Castle is a medieval water fortress in Belgium's Brabant region with three large circular towers made of brick. The structure is surrounded by a moat that holds water from nearby streams and protected the entire building.

The fortress was built in 1300 under the orders of Duke Jean II of Brabant and remained under different owners who maintained its function for centuries.

The castle demonstrates how people in the Middle Ages lived and protected themselves through its brick walls and surrounding water defenses. Visitors can see how this building style was typical for the Brabant region and different from other fortifications.

Visitors can explore the castle throughout the year, with outdoor areas freely accessible and guided tours available to see the medieval rooms inside. It is helpful to wear comfortable shoes since the grounds around the water moats can be uneven.

In the early 1800s the fortress was used as a cotton factory before it later fell into disrepair and was restored. This unusual use shows how old fortifications adapted to new economic times.
