Abbey of the Dunes

The Abbey of the Dunes is a monastic complex with surviving walls and foundations spanning multiple centuries of construction. The remains display different architectural periods from medieval times through the Renaissance era.

The abbey was established in the early 12th century and developed into a wealthy monastery controlling large estates. It suffered major damage during the 16th century conflicts that ravaged the region.

The name refers to the sand dunes that once surrounded the monastic grounds, which monks actively shaped and managed. Visitors can observe how the religious community adapted its layout to the coastal terrain.

The Ten Duinen Museum stands near the ruins and displays models and finds from the excavations. Visitors should expect a mix of paved paths and unpaved ground around the archaeological site.

The monastery operated significant sheep farming and conducted wool trade reaching as far as England, which was unusual for an inland monastery. This economic activity made the abbey one of the wealthiest institutions in the region.
