Stavelot

Stavelot is a town situated in the Amblève River valley in eastern Belgium, nestled among the forested hills of the Ardennes. The settlement spreads along the water course, with steep slopes rising on either side of the valley.

An abbey was founded here around 650 and became a major religious and political center for the surrounding region. This monastic establishment held territorial power as an independent principality within the broader Holy Roman Empire.

The museum here displays religious artwork and manuscripts spanning several centuries of local history. Visitors encounter objects that shaped the region's spiritual and cultural life over time.

The town sits about 20 kilometers from the famous Spa-Francorchamps racing circuit and connects via direct roads for easy access. Visitors can explore throughout the year, though early spring brings the most crowds and activity.

Every year in late winter, the Laetare carnival fills streets with hundreds of figures in red costumes wearing exaggerated long-nosed masks. These Blancs-Moussis figures throw confetti at spectators, creating a joyful street celebration rooted in local tradition.
