Caermers monastry, Medieval monastery in Patershol district, Ghent, Belgium.

Caermers monastery is a religious complex in Ghent comprising multiple stone buildings arranged around internal courtyards and passages. The structures feature Gothic architectural elements including arched doorways, vaulted ceilings, and narrow corridors that connect the different sections.

The monastery was founded in 1272 when Carmelite monks established their community in this location. Over time it became an integral part of the Patershol neighborhood, developing alongside the growing medieval quarter.

The monastery reflects Carmelite traditions through its religious spaces and their close relationship with daily life in the medieval quarter. Visitors can see how the building fits naturally into the surrounding community rather than standing apart from it.

The monastery is located on Vrouwebroersstraat near the Gravensteen fortress and can be reached by walking through narrow medieval streets. Wear comfortable shoes since the pathways are tight and uneven.

The stone pathways and street pattern surrounding the monastery remain unchanged since medieval times and form part of a UNESCO-recognized historic district. Few European neighborhoods preserve such an intact medieval street layout.
