Université Libre de Bruxelles, Research university in Solbosch district, Brussels, Belgium
The Université libre de Bruxelles is a research institution in the Solbosch district of Brussels, Belgium, spread across three main campuses that offer around forty undergraduate and two hundred and fifty graduate programs. The Solbosch, Plaine, and Erasmus sites include lecture halls, laboratories, libraries, and administrative buildings separated by streets and green spaces.
The institution was founded in 1834 as an independent establishment and split into two separate entities in 1969 due to linguistic differences. The French-speaking branch retained the original name and remained in Brussels.
The campus hosts students and researchers from over one hundred and fifty countries who attend lectures, seminars, and lab sessions in nearly every building. Faculty and visitors walk between red-brick blocks, modern glass halls, and older pavilions that connect through tree-lined paths and open squares.
The three sites are close to several tram lines and bus stops, making it possible to reach each campus within minutes. Libraries and public areas remain accessible during term time, while some labs and research facilities require permission to enter.
The institution maintains over four hundred and fifty partnerships with universities worldwide and offers thirty Master's programs taught entirely in English, even though French remains the primary language of instruction. Students can move between faculties and sites without leaving the city.
