Ardenne Castle, Royal château in Houyet, Belgium
The Royal Castle of Ardenne featured 140 guest rooms and modern facilities, including electric lighting, running water, telephones, and its own railway station.
King Leopold I acquired 708 hectares of land in 1837, initiating the construction of a rock tower and hunting lodge before the main castle was built.
The castle transformed into a luxury hotel where European nobility and wealthy travelers gathered, making Houyet a notable tourist destination from 1899 to 1949.
The remaining Leopold Tower now functions as a clubhouse, with guided tours available through local tourism offices in the Houyet region.
After serving as both a royal residence and grand hotel, the castle burned down in 1968 during roof repairs and was completely demolished in 1970.
