Spook bridge van Varsenare, Railway bridge in Varsenare, Belgium
Spook bridge van Varsenare consists of two separate concrete structures crossing railway Line 50A in the municipality of Jabbeke near Varsenare. The construction includes complete roadway elements such as asphalt and guardrails, even though the bridges never connected to any functioning road system.
The bridges were built in 1976 as part of a planned highway project around Bruges, but the project was abandoned in 1977. After the road plans were cancelled, they remained unused until demolition took place in 2011 and 2012.
The bridges became known locally as Spookbruggen, a name reflecting their abandoned state and giving them an identity within the regional landscape. Residents noticed and talked about this unusual structure because it stood out so distinctly from typical infrastructure.
The site is difficult to access today because the bridges have been demolished and the area has transformed into a nature reserve. Visitors should know that little remains of the original structures and the land is now managed for natural habitat.
The bridges were fully equipped with asphalt and guardrails despite leading nowhere from their construction. This strange sight of a road vanishing into nothing made them a peculiar local landmark.
