The Ancienne école n°11 et école n°13 is a school complex comprising three distinct volumes arranged symmetrically around a central courtyard. The building features separate wings for boys, girls, and kindergarten classes, along with large windows for natural light, ceramic floors, and an adjoining landscaped garden area.
Construction began in 1902 on the initiative of municipal councilor Louis Bertrand to provide schooling access for working-class families in the Linthout area. The project reflected early 1900s reform movements pushing for expanded public education across Brussels.
The interior spaces feature intricate sgraffito work by Privat Livemont depicting natural motifs and everyday life scenes throughout the building. These decorative elements shape how visitors experience the rooms and reflect the period's appreciation for crafted details.
The complex is located on Avenue de Roodebeek and continues to function as an active school while preserving its architectural heritage. Visitors should note this is an occupied school site, so viewing is best done from outside or by arranging access in advance.
