Grotte de Spy, Paleolithic cave in Jemeppe-sur-Sambre, Belgium.

The Grotte de Spy consists of multiple chambers and corridors situated above the Orneau River valley in the Namur Province of Belgium.

The excavation in 1886 by Marcel de Puydt and Max Lohest revealed two Neanderthal skeletons, marking a fundamental change in understanding human evolution.

The site contains over 12,000 faunal remains from the Pleistocene period, including mammoth bones and tools indicating both Neanderthal and modern human presence.

Visitors can join guided tours for 30 euros through Les Amis de l'Homme de Spy organization, with advance reservations required by phone.

Scientists extracted DNA from a Spy 1 molar in 2018, providing genetic information about Neanderthal populations in northwest Europe.
