Venetiaanse Gaanderijen, Protected monument and arcade in Ostend, Belgium.
The Venetiaanse Gaanderijen is a protected monument and arcade along Ostend's seafront, designed with classical architecture featuring arches, columns, and ornamental stonework. The structure connects multiple rooms and creates a continuous covered promenade running along the coast.
King Leopold II commissioned architect Henri Maquet in 1900 to build this covered walkway. It was designed to connect his royal villa with a large octagonal salon.
The galleries now serve as exhibition spaces displaying art collections and hosting cultural events throughout the year. Visitors can discover both contemporary and historical works displayed in these elegant surroundings.
The location sits along Zeedijk and can be comfortably explored on foot in most weather. The covered structure provides shelter from rain and strong coastal winds.
The design combines Belgian coastal architecture with Venetian style elements. This unusual mix of influences came from the king's desire to incorporate elements from his travels.
