Collège en Isle
Collège en Isle was a school building in Liège located on an island near the Meuse River. It contained multiple wings, a chapel, classrooms, a dormitory, and a large hall with glass and metal construction resembling Eiffel Tower style.
The school was founded in 1582 by the Jesuits and quickly grew into a major educational institution with over 1000 students. After the Jesuits were expelled by papal decree in 1773, the building continued to serve educational purposes and was later taken over by the University of Liège.
The college served as a center for public learning and social gatherings in Liège. Theater performances, debates, and literary events held here attracted residents and became important occasions for the community to gather together.
The site is located near the Meuse River and is now part of the University of Liège campus. It is easily accessible by walking through the city streets and offers a view of how historic architecture blends with modern university facilities.
A large hall built in 1896 with glass and metal construction resembling the Eiffel Tower style hosted concerts featuring famous musicians like violinist Eugène Ysaye. The founding of football club Standard Liège took place in this hall in 1898.
