Fort de Cognelée, Military fortress in Namur, Belgium
Fort de Cognelée is a military fortress near Namur built with a triangular design and surrounded by deep defensive ditches. The structure features casemate gun positions and was constructed using unreinforced concrete, a relatively new building method for the time.
The fortress was built between 1888 and 1892 under General Henri Alexis Brialmont, a leading military engineer of the era. It was constructed as part of a broader defensive system protecting the Namur region.
The fortress shows how Belgian military engineers of the late 1800s applied new building materials and techniques to create stronger defenses. Visitors can see these innovations reflected in the structure and design choices that remain visible on site.
The fortress is located about 5 kilometers north of Namur's center and is not currently open to the public. While you can view the exterior and surrounding area, access to the interior is restricted due to the building's condition.
The fort contains a well-preserved assembly hall with side passages connecting to the gun turrets. The original defensive trenches around the perimeter show how large the entire defensive network was designed to be.
