Sint-Waldetrudiskerk, Gothic parish church in Herentals, Belgium.
Sint-Waldetrudiskerk is a Gothic parish church with a characteristic medieval layout where a tower is positioned between the chancel and nave. The building was constructed entirely from white limestone in Brabantine Gothic style and preserves its original structure despite modifications across multiple construction phases.
Construction of the church began in the 14th century, and the choir was completed in 1449, marking the conclusion of an important building phase. In the 18th century, further adjustments were made, including the addition of a new sacristy that modernized the complex.
The church displays numerous artworks, including a rare signed altarpiece by Passier Borreman from the early 16th century depicting scenes from the lives of Saints Crispin and Crispinian. These pieces reflect the artistic importance this place held for the local community.
Access to the church is through Kerkplein in central Herentals, with doors mainly open on Friday through Sunday afternoons. It is wise to check exact visiting times in advance, as these can vary depending on the season.
The church tower appears visually to sink into the nave due to the massive 14th-century tower contrasting with the later, taller nave structure. This unusual effect is the result of the time gaps between the different building phases.
