Tank memorial

The Tank memorial is a preserved Panther tank positioned in the central square of Houffalize on Place de Roi Albert. This German military vehicle was recovered from the Ourthe River and now stands as a physical reminder of wartime destruction.

The tank belonged to the German 116th Panzer Division and sank into the Ourthe River during the Ardennes campaign. Engineers recovered it from the riverbed in 1948 and relocated it to its present location as a memorial.

This memorial marks the arrival of Allied forces that liberated Houffalize from German occupation in 1945. Today it serves as a gathering point where locals and visitors reflect on the town's role in that pivotal moment.

The memorial sits on a public square and is freely accessible at any time. Since it stands outdoors, it is best visited during fair weather and suitable for a quick stop while exploring the town center.

The tank bears the original identification number 111, which engineers documented when the vehicle was pulled from the river. This marking helps historians trace the exact unit and history of the specific machine.
