Hôtel des chemins de fer is a modern office building with 3 stories located near South Station in Charleroi. Its design features brick and concrete walls, with horizontal bands of windows running across the facade and a central volume flanked by two lower lateral wings.
The building was constructed in 1933 as a railway logistics facility with the collaboration of engineer Paul Nouille and architect Henry Van de Velde. It emerged during a period when Belgium was modernizing its railway infrastructure and developing specialized facilities for operations.
The building represents a significant example of Belgian modernist architecture, combining functional design with industrial infrastructure requirements of the 1930s.
The building sits near the South Station, making it straightforward to locate within the city center. While the exterior is viewable from the street, the interior has been converted for residential use and is not open to public access.
In 2021, the railway company SNCB sold the building to property companies Ikoab and Koeckelberg. The conversion into co-living spaces shows how historical railway infrastructure is being adapted for contemporary residential concepts.
