Est Region, Administrative region in eastern Burkina Faso.
Est Region is an administrative territory in eastern Burkina Faso comprising five provinces: Gnagna, Gourma, Komondjari, Kompienga, and Tapoa. The capital city Fada N'Gourma serves as the main hub for the region's communities and commerce.
The region was created on July 2, 2001, through administrative reorganization that followed decentralization laws of 1998. This reform transformed how Burkina Faso's government managed its territory.
Local communities practice farming as a way of life, relying on crops like millet, sorghum, and cotton that shape daily rhythms. These agricultural traditions connect families to the land across the plateau landscape.
A network of about 960 kilometers of highways connects the provinces and supports trade between communities. Roads vary in condition depending on the season, so planning travel around weather patterns is advisable.
Three major rivers cross the region: the Red Volta, Black Volta, and White Volta, shaping how water flows through the landscape. Local farmers depend on these waterways for irrigation and sustaining their crops throughout the year.
