Kotel, city in Kotel municipality, Sliven oblast, Bulgaria
Kotel is a town and the seat of Kotel Municipality in the Sliven Province of Bulgaria, set in the Balkan Mountains. The old part of town is made up of traditional houses along narrow, winding lanes that follow the slopes of the surrounding hills.
Kotel grew into a notable trade and craft center during the 18th century, under Ottoman rule. It became closely linked to the Bulgarian National Revival movement and produced several key figures of that period.
The name Kotel comes from the Bulgarian word for "cauldron", likely referring to the bowl-shaped valley where the town sits. Walking through the old quarter, visitors can still see houses from the 18th and 19th centuries with wooden balconies and stone foundations.
The old town sits on a hillside, so expect uneven cobblestones and some steep sections along the way. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, especially after rain when the stone paths can become slippery.
Kotel is the birthplace of Georgi Rakovski, one of the central figures in the 19th-century movement for Bulgarian independence. The town has a museum dedicated to him, housed in a preserved Revival-era building.
