Saint Sophia Church

The Saint Sophia Church features a cross-shaped basilica design with three naves, constructed using red bricks and measuring 47 meters in length and 20 meters in width.

The current structure, built in the early sixth century, stands upon the foundations of three previous churches, with the earliest dating back to the fourth century.

The church holds such significance that in the fourteenth century, the entire city of Sofia adopted its name, replacing the previous name of Serdica.

Visitors can explore both the main church space and the underground level, which contains ancient tombs and archaeological remains from the Roman period.

The building served multiple functions throughout centuries, including as a mosque during Ottoman rule and as a fire brigade watchtower in the nineteenth century.
