National Museum of Natural History, Natural history museum in Sofia, Bulgaria
The National Museum of Natural History is a research institution in Sofia with four floors and roughly fifteen exhibition halls. The collections display animals, plants, and minerals from Bulgaria and around the world.
The institution was founded in 1889 and was the first natural history facility on the Balkan Peninsula. It developed into a major center for scientific research in southeastern Europe.
The institution reflects how Bulgarian scientists have shaped understanding of local nature and biodiversity. Visitors experience not just displayed specimens, but also how people here connect with and study the natural world around them.
The museum is located on Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard in the city center and is easy to reach by public transport. It opens daily, allowing visitors to plan their visit time flexibly.
The collection includes remains of species that once lived in the region but are now extinct, such as the Carolina parakeet and monk seal. These specimens show how animal life on the Balkan Peninsula has changed over time.
