Aldomirovtsi marsh, Protected wetland near Slivnitsa, Bulgaria.
Aldomirovtsi marsh is a protected wetland in Bulgaria covering about 130 hectares of land. It contains reed beds and open water areas that provide habitat for waterfowl and numerous plant species.
The area received official protection status in 1989 to safeguard its natural habitats. The marsh sits on karst terrain, which shapes how water moves through the landscape.
The nearby areas Meka Crev and Tri Ushi mark locations of the 1885 Slivnitsa battle during the Serbo-Bulgarian War.
The area is located near Slivnitsa and easily reached from European route E80. Visitors can watch birds and wildlife from established observation points throughout the site.
An earthquake in 2012 caused an underground drainage through a natural sinkhole that completely dried out the marsh. Experts sealed the opening with clay and concrete to stop the drainage and restore water levels.
