Djumaya Mosque

Djumaya Mosque is a place of worship in Central Plovdiv featuring nine domes across its structure. The building has a prominent minaret at its northeast corner and includes separate prayer sections for men and women, along with areas for ritual ablution.

Built in the 1360s after Ottoman forces took control of Plovdiv, the mosque replaced an earlier Christian place of worship. This shift marked a change in the religious landscape of the city.

The interior walls hold painted decorations from the late 18th century, showing Ottoman artistic traditions in religious spaces. These ornaments reflect the Islamic art that flourished in this part of Europe during that period.

The building has specific visiting hours and it is wise to check ahead before arriving. Keep in mind this is an active place of worship where respectful behavior is expected, especially during prayer times.

The building experienced a serious security incident in 2014 that led to increased protective measures. This event became part of the mosque's modern story and its role in the community.
