Hindliyan house, Revival-era museum in Central District, Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
Hindliyan House is a Revival-period museum and building in the Central District of Plovdiv. Its interior features detailed wall murals depicting international cities, intricately patterned wooden ceilings, and traditional European architectural elements throughout.
The house was built between 1834 and 1835 for Armenian merchant Stepan Hindliyan, who established trade connections spanning from Bulgaria to India. These extensive trade networks allowed the owner to design his home with cosmopolitan influences.
The house shows how successful merchants during the Revival period designed their homes and which European styles they valued most. The rooms reveal through their decoration how Bulgaria came into contact with Western aesthetics during this time.
The house is open most days of the week with varying hours depending on the season. Plan your visit during daylight hours to fully appreciate the wall decorations and interior details.
The ground floor contains the only surviving 19th-century bathroom remaining in Bulgaria, complete with a hot water heating system and Turkish steam room features. This technical marvel reveals how progressive the owner was for his era.
