Hisar Kapia

Hisar Kapia features stones surrounded by red brick pieces bonded with white mortar, displaying medieval Bulgarian construction techniques above its arch.

The gate dates back to the 11th century, built upon foundations of a Roman structure from the 2nd century, serving as one of three entrances to ancient Plovdiv.

The gate marks a transition point between different architectural periods, from Roman foundations through medieval Bulgarian modifications to Ottoman-era merchant houses.

Located at a central point in Plovdiv's Old Town, the gate connects multiple walking routes and provides access to numerous historical attractions.

The foundations beneath the cobblestone street pavement contain remains of the original Roman gate, while the upper structure showcases medieval Bulgarian masonry techniques.
