Museum of Socialist Art

Museum of Socialist Art is a space in Sofia dedicated to art from Bulgaria's period as a socialist country from 1944 to 1989. The building houses a 7,500-square-meter sculpture park, galleries with paintings, and a screening room for documentary films.

The collection preserves art and monuments from Bulgaria's time as a socialist nation, gathering works that once had official support. The museum opened in 2011 to maintain these pieces and allow visitors to understand that chapter of the country's past.

The outdoor sculpture park shows how artists once depicted workers, farmers, and leaders in simplified forms that reflected the state's values. Walking through the installations reveals how art was used to communicate with the public in that era.

The space is easy to reach in the Izgrev district and opens from Tuesday to Sunday. Visitors should allow time to walk through both indoor galleries and the outdoor sculpture park, as the whole visit can take several hours.

At the entrance stands the original five-pointed star that once topped the Party House in downtown Sofia, removed decades ago and now displayed on its own platform. This single object tells the story of how the city's skyline and symbols changed over time.
