Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" Museum of Paleontology and Historical Geology

Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" Museum of Paleontology and Historical Geology, Geological and natural history museum at Sofia University, Bulgaria

The Sofia University Museum of Paleontology and Historical Geology occupies two sections on the fifth floor of the North Wing, displaying over 150,000 specimens of fossils and geological materials. The collection includes examples from different geological epochs and offers a comprehensive overview of Earth's development.

The museum was founded in 1897 by Professor Georgi Zlatarski with paleontological specimens that established the foundation for geological studies in Bulgaria. This early collection grew into one of the country's most important scientific institutions for researching Earth's history.

The museum shows how Bulgaria developed its role in fossil research and understanding Earth's history. Visitors can observe how scientists and students work here to learn about the geological past of our planet.

The museum is accessible on weekdays in two time slots and is located in central Sofia. Visitors should be flexible with timing, as opening hours are limited, especially if planning to visit in the afternoon.

At the museum entrance stands a reconstructed skeleton of a Deinotherium thraciensis discovered in 1965, preserved at over 90 percent completeness with its original bones. This rare specimen highlights the paleontological treasures that have been found in Bulgaria.
