Navahrudak

Navahrudak is an administrative center in Hrodna Region in western Belarus, positioned on a hillside in the eastern landscape. The town spreads over gently rolling ground and sits at roughly 290 meters above sea level.

The settlement appears first in 1044 in the Sofia First Chronicle and quickly developed into an important hub. Later it became a major center of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and contributed to the political and administrative growth of the region.

The Transfiguration Church preserves the baptismal records of poet Adam Mickiewicz, who spent his early years here in 1798. This connection to Polish and Lithuanian romanticism continues to shape local awareness today, as residents see Mickiewicz as an important part of their cultural inheritance.

The town is accessible by road from several directions, and the center sits mostly on raised ground. Visitors should plan a bit of time to walk between scattered points of interest and account for the hilly topography.

Archaeological excavations at the Small Castle uncovered the Cup of Saint Jadwiga, a notable example of medieval craftsmanship from the region. This find confirms the earlier role of the town as a spiritual and political center in the Middle Ages.
