Hibernia oil field, Oil field in Jeanne d'Arc Basin, Canada.
The Hibernia oil field is an offshore production facility in the Jeanne d'Arc Basin, located about 315 kilometers southeast of St. John's in the North Atlantic. The site operates through a large platform that continuously extracts oil from the seafloor.
Discovery of the field in 1979 through the P-15 well marked the start of major offshore oil production in Eastern Canada. Since then it has developed into one of the region's most important production sites.
The platform changed Newfoundland's economy by bringing energy production jobs to a region historically dependent on fishing. It represents a shift in how local communities view their economic future and natural resources.
The platform operates around the clock with workers rotating in three-week shifts on site followed by three weeks onshore. The facility is not open to visitors as it is an active industrial zone in harsh ocean conditions located far from land.
The platform uses a gravity base structure weighing around 600,000 tons, making it the heaviest offshore oil installation globally. This massive construction was specifically engineered to withstand the extreme storms and iceberg pressures of the North Atlantic.
