Whitby, Municipal town in Ontario, Canada
Whitby is a town in the Regional Municipality of Durham in Ontario that extends along Lake Ontario and connects residential areas with parks, beaches and older quarters. The southern districts sit by the water, while northern areas include fields, forests and farmland.
The first settlers arrived in the region around 1800, but the town only took shape in the 1830s when Peter Perry developed land and laid out streets. In the following decades the place grew into a regional administrative center with railway connections.
The Whitby Historical Society Museum preserves collections from the 19th century in a brick building that shows local craft traditions and early settlement stories. Visitors see tools, furniture and everyday objects that document the lives of the first generations.
Durham Region Transit serves the town with bus lines that link neighboring communities, while GO Transit runs trains to Toronto. Those visiting the center find shops, restaurants and public buildings along the main streets in the southern part.
The facility known as the Abilities Centre offers sports programs and fitness options designed for people with different physical abilities. The building includes swimming pools, sports halls and training rooms that allow barrier-free access.
